Four honor guards who accompanied the casket
of former President Corazon Aquino during her
funeral procession last August will not be
given special treatment once they are designated
as security escorts of president-elect Benigno
Aquino III. Incoming Presidential Security Group
(PSG) commander Col. Ramon Mateo Dizon told The
STAR the honor guards will undergo the usual
training.
“The PSG is a professional unit,” he said.
“We work as a team and no one is above the others.
They (honor guards) have to undergo the usual
processes. It is hard to treat people differently.”
Just like any other member of the PSG, Dizon said
he expects the honor guards to do their best in
securing the incoming president.
“It would be an honor to be a protector of the
President. You don’t say no to the President,”
Dizon said.
Army Private First Class Antonio Cadiente, Airman
Second Class Gener Laguindan, Navy Petty Officer 3
Edgardo Rodriguez and Police Officer 2 Danilo Malab
Jr. are being eyed as close-in security of the
incoming president. Dizon said the transfer papers
of the three military personnel are now being
processed. “We have requested their transfer from
J1 (deputy chief of staff for personnel),” he said.
“Hopefully, their transfer orders would be approved
before July 1.” Dizon said the transfer papers of
other military personnel who secured Aquino’s funeral
last year are also being processed.
Seaman First Class Arturo Roadilla, Jr. Airman First
Class Sherwin del Rosario, and Army Private First
Class Rico Seno escorted Mrs. Aquino’s remains from
the funeral home to the Manila cathedral in Intramuros.
Dizon said the honor guards will undergo the usual
45-day training on securing prominent persons.
Information from the Armed Forces Public Affairs
Office showed that such training include food tasting,
marksmanship, bomb disposal, crowd control, and media
relations.
The honor guards were lauded for their dedication to
duty after they stood for more than eight hours during
the long funeral parade of Aquino, who died of colon
cancer on Aug. 1 last year. The late president’s casket
was brought in a procession from the Manila Cathedral
in Intramuros, Manila to the Manila Memorial Park in
Parañaque.

The Philippine Coast Guard has rendered
testimonial honors for three retiring
Navy Flag Officers as a fitting tribute
for their dedicated and glorious service
at the PCG, Philippine Navy and the Armed
Forces of the Philippines.
The PCG, under the leadership of
Adm. Wilfredo Tamayo, PCG commandant,
honored Comm. Robert Noblefranca,
Rear Adm. Josefino Solidum and Vice
Adm. Emilio Marayag at the PCG Headquarters
last June 9.
Noblefranca was assigned to the PCG from
1978 to 1988. He commanded Coast Guard
Stations in Cebu, Dumaguete and Tacloban.
He had also assumed as deputy of Coast
Guard Staff for Plans and Programs in 1988
as his last tour of duty at the PCG headsquarters.
Noblefranca, the incumbent commander of the
Naval Construction Brigade of the Philippine Navy,
is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy
Class ’77.
Solidum, on the other hand, had served the PCG
for 14 years in his 33 years of service in the
military. When he joined the Philippine Navy,
he was first assigned to a Coast Guard vessel
where he served his junior billets and continued
his sea duty as the EX-O in five PCG capital ships.
He also commanded the premier Coast Guard stations
in Batangas and Cebu. He graduated from the United
States Coast Guard Academy in 1977. He is presently
the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command.
Marayag graduated at the PMA in 1976 with a
Bachelor of Science Degree. He started his
colorful military career in 1976 when he joined
the Philippine Navy as an ensign.
His dedication and commitment to duty afforded
him to serve various key positions at the PCG.
He has served the PCG from Oct. 29, 1979 to
April 17, 1990.
He had served various staff positions at the
PCG Headquarters and had also been the station
commander of Coast Guard Station General Santos
and Coast Guard Station Davao. He was also
assigned as maritime officer of the 8th Coast
Guard District, deputy commander and operations
officer of the Aids to Navigation Command,
officer-in-charge of the Coast Guard School
and the training director of Aids to Navigation
Command.
Marayag has assumed the second highest post in
the AFP when he served as the deputy chief of
staff.
In his remarks, Tamayo highlighted all the three
honorees’ significant contributions to the PCG,
the maritime industry and, most importantly, to
the Filipino people.
Tamayo said their legacy in the Coast Guard
service would always be remembered and treasured
by the officers, men and women of the PCG.

Marines detailed as security personnel during the May 10
elections in hotspot areas in Mindanao, particularly Sulu
province, proved the soldiers' honor and integrity when they
turned down bribe offers from politicians, an act which the
Armed Forces deemed worthy of recognition. Marine commandant
Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban ordered the issuance of appropriate
awards to all Marine personnel who performed election security
duties in the region after a receiving a report from the Joint
Task Force Comet (JTF) in Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom)
of the Marines who stood by commitment to protect the
credibility of the elections when they refused to heed to bribery
attempts that would have allowed cheating in the recent polls.
Marine Battalion Landing Team 5 (MBLT5) commanding officer
Lt. Col. Camilo Balutan reported there were numerous instances
that campaign personalities attempted to bribe the Marines who
were performing election-related duties particularly at the
Kaumpang Elementary School in Sulu. The unscupulous campaign
leaders of certain politicians reportedly offered huge amount of
money to the Marines in exchange of leaving the precincts.

ng Philippine Marines ang tangkang panunuhol
ng ilang campaign leader ng ilang kandidato
sa ilang sundalong nagsilbing security sa ilang
presinto sa Sulu.
Ayon kay Lt. Col. Camilo Balutan, commander ng
Marine Battalion Landing Team 5 (MBLT5),
malalaking halaga ang iniumang ng mga campaign
leader sa ilang sundalo na namuno sa pagbibigay
ng seguridad, lisanin lamang ang presinto at
mai-tamper ng mga ito ang ballot boxes.
Gaya na lamang ang karanasan ni Private First
Class Rhomel Divina na siyang namuno sa
seguridad sa Maligay polling precinct kung
saan sinubukang suhulan siya ng halagang P100,000.
Pero ang isinagot umano nito sa sumusuhol:
“Hindi nababayaran ng pera mo ang serbisyo ko.”
Ganito rin ang naging karanasan ng halos lahat
ng mga sundalong naitalaga sa mga presinto ng
Kaumpang Elementary School.
Ayon naman kay Staff Sergeant William Magpili,
nilapitan din siya sa Baunon Bangkal precinct
at tinangkang suhulan ng napakalaking halaga
para hayaan ang nanunuhol na i-tamper ang
natitirang 168 balota.

nito ang mga naganap na panunuhol sa kanyang

MANILA, Philippines - The Marine Corps revealed yesterday
that some groups tried to bribe its troops who were
assigned to secure the recent elections in Sulu.
In a statement, Marines spokesman Capt. Alden Gwyn
Amargo said bribery attempts were reported in the
areas of Kaumpang, Maligay and Baunoh Bangkal.
Amargo said Marine Commandant Maj. Gen. Juancho
Sabban ordered that Marines who performed poll
security duties in Sulu be honored after learning
that they refused the bribe offers.
Amargo said awards will also be given to other
Marines deployed in other precincts “who steadfastly
performed exemplary election security duties and
vehemently refused any attempt of bribery to prevent
the ill intents of some political personalities.”
Sabban said they were conducting interviews to
verify other reports of bribery attempts.
“We want to determine how widespread these instances
are. I am sure there are many instances
(of bribery attempts)… The presence of the Marines
deterred election anomalies such as these,” he said.
Amargo said the Marine Battalion Landing Team 5
reported that there were numerous instances when
campaign leaders tried to bribe its men deployed
at the Kaumpang Elementary School.
Pfc. Rhomel Divina, who was assigned to secure
a polling precinct in Maligay, said a campaign
leader offered him P100,000 for him to leave the
area so the latter and his cohorts could fill
out the remaining ballots for their candidate.
“Your money cannot pay for my services,” Divina
told the campaign leader in Filipino.
Amargo said a campaign leader also attempted to
bribe S/Sgt. William Magpili, who was securing
a polling precinct in Baunoh Bangkal.
Asked if Marines observed cheating in Sulu and
Basilan, Sabban said it would be up to the
Commission on Elections to conduct an investigation.
He, however, maintained that the recent elections
were generally peaceful and orderly.
Before the May 10 elections, Defense Secretary
Norberto Gonzales said there were groups which
would try to rig the poll results by bribing
soldiers and policemen.
He, however, did not identify the politicians
behind these groups.
Armed Forces chief Gen. Delfin Bangit said the
peaceful conduct of the elections restored the
credibility of the military, which had been
tainted by allegations of involvement in poll
fraud and partisanship in the past.

of them failed.

the three soldiers for displaying professionalism
and dedication to their job.

in on the afternoon of May 10 "so he and
his cohorts could fill up the more than
three hundred remaining ballots for his candidate."

Navy ready for rainy season

The Philippine Navy said on Saturday that
it is ready to deploy its personnel and
equipment in flood-prone areas nationwide
as the rainy season approaches.
The Navy’s disaster preparedness was put
to test last May 26 when flashfloods hit
10 villages in Sultan Kudarat, affecting
35,000 people and causing damage to
24 hectares of farmland and a wide span
of the farm-to-market road in the town.
Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman,
said that the Navy has pre-organized,
pre-planned, and pre-equipped rescue
teams integrated in all naval units to
reach out to needy citizens when calamities
and disasters occur.
“Gaining from its experience during the
onslaught of typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng”
last year, the Navy has strengthened its
disaster response operations in four

The Philippine Navy said on Saturday that
it is ready to deploy its personnel and
equipment in flood-prone areas nationwide
as the rainy season approaches.
The Navy’s disaster preparedness was put
to test last May 26 when flashfloods hit
10 villages in Sultan Kudarat, affecting
35,000 people and causing damage to
24 hectares of farmland and a wide span
of the farm-to-market road in the town.
Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman,
said that the Navy has pre-organized,
pre-planned, and pre-equipped rescue
teams integrated in all naval units to
reach out to needy citizens when calamities
and disasters occur.
“Gaining from its experience during the
onslaught of typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng”
last year, the Navy has strengthened its
disaster response operations in four
areas- equipage, command and control, training,
and coordination,” said Arevalo.

it was the envy of the region.
Other developing nations in Southeast Asia that
were then beginning to form their own navies even
took guidance from the Philippines where maritime
defense in concerned.
However, five decades later, the Philippine Navy
is now considered the weakest in Asia — owing to a
series of internal conflicts and political crises
that resulted in a turn back in the country’s naval
defense development. Add to this the fact that the
government had been spending less — compared to its
Asian neighbors — for its military forces.
With the Philippines being an archipelagic nation
with a maritime domain that spans some 37,652
kilometers or 10.6 percent of the total 356,000
kilometers of the world’s coastline, the need for a
strong navy has always been emphasized.
In an interview, Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy
spokesman, said the Navy undoubtedly faces an
especially challenging gargantuan task with most
of its ships, as no less than former Navy
Flag Officer-in-Command, Vice Adm. Ferdinand Golez
admits, are even older than him and most of the
naval fleet’s officers.
“That has long been an open secret. To the pundits,
external aggression is remote at this time,”
said Arevalo, adding, “If the Philippines wants to
regain the respect of its neighbors and restore
pride in the hearts of its people, a strong navy

50 to 60-years-old.

NAMAYAGPAG ang Marine at Philippine National Police (PNP) teams sa katatapos na Cobra Energy Dink Dragon Boat Regatta 2010 na ginawa sa Manila Bay nitong Linggo.
Ang Fleet-Marine team ay natapos ng 1st sa men’s division, 2nd ang Philippine Dragon Fireblades, 3rd ang PNP at nasa 4th naman ang La Salle University (DSLU) Rowing Team.
Nanguna naman ang PNP sa women’s division, 2nd place ang Triton, 3rd ang DSLU at lumaglag sa 4th ang Rowers Club Philippines.
Napagwagian rin ng Fleet-Marine ang mixed division mataposilampaso ang Philippine Dragon Team Fireblades at Rowers Club Philippines.
Bago ang finals, dalawang Bangka mula sa PNP at Rowers Club Philippines at bumaligtad habang lumalaban dahil sa malakas na alon sa Manila Bay.
Wala naming nasaktan sa insidente dahil agad na nasagip ang mga miyembro ng teams.
Ayon kay Nestor Ilagan, technical director ng Philippine Dragot Boat Federation, talagang nangyayari ang paglubog ng Bangka tuwing kumpetisyon.

improvised explosive devices (IEDs) , blasting caps and electrical
wirings on Saturday afternoon after a firefight with suspected
Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Talipao town, in Sulu.

"The marines were on patrol and site survey for a road project

complete within his remaining 45 days in office government-to-government
contracts for the acquisition of equipments needed for the Armed
Forces modernization program. President Arroyo herself has
expressed full support to the Navy's intention to procure an MRV, which
will help enhance the naval fleet's capability in territorial defense and
internal security operations, as well as humanitarian missions.
The need for a strong Philippine Navy has always been emphasized
in order to secure the country's maritime domain that spans 37,652

threats is already 60 percent complete with just a few
adjustments to make it fully operational, Navy chief Rear
Admiral Danilo Cortez announced
yesterday. Dubbed Coast Watch Philippines,
Cortez said this first line of defense is envisioned
after Coast Watch South now in full operation and monitoring
major activities in the sea lanes, particularly in southern
Mindanao. Coast Watch South is a combined anti-terror under-.
taking by the United States, Australian and Philippine
governments to monitor and intercept local and foreign terrorists
leaving and entering the country through the southern
backdoor, The US and British governments
have installed monitoring systems at various key points in the country.
"Our Coast Watch Philippines is 60 percent complete
and I intend to pursue this project under my watch as
Navy chief," Cortez said. Cortez took over the reign
of the more than 20,000-strong Navy yesterday, succeeding
Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez who retired from the service.
After installation of these radar monitoring systems are
completed, Cortez said technical people will be working
to "harmonize and integrate operations" of the two systems
to be fully operational. Cortez declined to elaborate
on the details of the project for security reasons.
It was learned, however, the project involved key government
and private agencies that are sending out actual time
information on what is happening in the country's major
sea lanes. "We will endeavor to enhance
the connectivity of the existing and newly-built radar
stations with the Coast Watch Center. Once fully operational,
we can monitor all significant activities in all of the country's
major sea lanes," Cortez said. A Naval officer added Coast
Watch Philippine will function
just like the US's 911,wherein people will be manning its
nerve center and relay all significant events monitored via
installed radar stations in key points of the country.
"This will not only involve the Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP) but other government agencies. If they see
something illegal like smuggling and illegal fishing activities,
the center will immediately relay this to the nearest
Naval or Coast Guard st1tion for immediate action," the official
said. The same procedures will also be followed if there are air
or sea intrusions by unfriendly military forces or unidentified
vessels or aircraft, "So this is our first line of defense. If the threat is
monitored on the country's airspace, the Air Force will
be immediately informed for appropriate action. If it is on
the sea, then our Navy will be dispatched," the officer said.

Cortez assumes command of Navy

Rear Admiral Danilo Cortez Saturday
assumed as the transition Flag
Officer-in-Command of the Philippine
Navy, taking over from Vice Admiral
Ferdinand Golez, who has reached
the mandatory age of 56.
Cortez, who is the 31st FOIC of
the Navy, will be holding over the
post until such time that the incoming
President and Commander-in-Chief
will appoint a regular FOIC.
Golez, meanwhile, has been requested
by Defense Secretary Norberto
Gonzales to continue to serve
at least 45 days more as adviser to
the defense chief and to the Office of
the National Security Adviser. Golez
has accepted the offer.
In assuming the post, Cortez
thanked Golez for entrusting to him
the flag for acknowledging his
capability to continue the mission
which he (Golez) has started for the
Navy.
"We are truly thankful for the way
you have led the Philippine Navy. Indeed,
you are the epitome of the Navy
way of service," Cortez said in acknowledging
his predecessor's leadership.
Cortez, at the same time, vowed to
continue and aspire to complete the
programs that were started by Golez,
including the acquisition of multi-role
vessels (MRVs), all geared towards
the vision of becoming a strong and
credible Navy that the our maritime
nation deserves.
"I will guarantee that I will continue
the voyage Vice Admiral Golez has set
for us and work out of the box to hasten
its accomplishment," Cortez stated. "I
may not be able to inject new programs
during my stay as your FOIC, but I
promise to bring you closer to the attainment
of our vision," he added.
Golez on the other hand, said that
for the 22months of his stint as head of
the Navy, he led the organization
into exerting all efforts for the accomplishment
of programs that will allow
the Navy to move forward.
"I have planted seeds of commitment
and dedication to every sailor and
marine for them to grow individually
and collectively," said Golez, even as he
enjoined the officers, men and women
of the Navy to continue to pursue what
he has already started for them.
In describing what he has done in
his 22months as Navy FOIC, Golez had
this to share: Beyond the horizon of
my dreams now lie the outcome of our
efforts of today making us all aware of
the value of a Navy for the progress and
development of this maritime nation. A
commitment we will all share."
Meanwhile, Gonzales, who presided
over the turnover ceremony, said
Golez may have reached the end of
his military career but not as a public
servant. He said he has offered Golez
to serve as his adviser in the defense
department and as NSA, which the
latter accepted.

Officer-in-Command of the Philippine
Navy, taking over from Vice Admiral
Ferdinand Golez, who has reached
the mandatory age of 56.
Cortez, who is the 31st FOIC of
the Navy, will be holding over the
post until such time that the incoming
President and Commander-in-Chief
will appoint a regular FOIC.
Golez, meanwhile, has been requested
by Defense Secretary Norberto
Gonzales to continue to serve
at least 45 days more as adviser to
the defense chief and to the Office of
the National Security Adviser. Golez
has accepted the offer.
In assuming the post, Cortez
thanked Golez for entrusting to him
the flag for acknowledging his
capability to continue the mission
which he (Golez) has started for the
Navy.
"We are truly thankful for the way
you have led the Philippine Navy. Indeed,
you are the epitome of the Navy
way of service," Cortez said in acknowledging
his predecessor's leadership.
Cortez, at the same time, vowed to
continue and aspire to complete the
programs that were started by Golez,
including the acquisition of multi-role
vessels (MRVs), all geared towards
the vision of becoming a strong and
credible Navy that the our maritime
nation deserves.
"I will guarantee that I will continue
the voyage Vice Admiral Golez has set
for us and work out of the box to hasten
its accomplishment," Cortez stated. "I
may not be able to inject new programs
during my stay as your FOIC, but I
promise to bring you closer to the attainment
of our vision," he added.
Golez on the other hand, said that
for the 22months of his stint as head of
the Navy, he led the organization
into exerting all efforts for the accomplishment
of programs that will allow
the Navy to move forward.
"I have planted seeds of commitment
and dedication to every sailor and
marine for them to grow individually
and collectively," said Golez, even as he
enjoined the officers, men and women
of the Navy to continue to pursue what
he has already started for them.
In describing what he has done in
his 22months as Navy FOIC, Golez had
this to share: Beyond the horizon of
my dreams now lie the outcome of our
efforts of today making us all aware of
the value of a Navy for the progress and
development of this maritime nation. A
commitment we will all share."
Meanwhile, Gonzales, who presided
over the turnover ceremony, said
Golez may have reached the end of
his military career but not as a public
servant. He said he has offered Golez
to serve as his adviser in the defense
department and as NSA, which the
latter accepted.

LEGAZPI CITY – Sinagip ng Navy sailors ang 22 tripulante ng cargo vessel na sumadsad sa Ticao Island sa Masbate kahapon, ayon sa ulat ng Navy Official.
Sinabi ni Lt. Denver Ramon, spokesman ng Navy sa Bicol, nagsagawa ng distress call ang MV Pacifico dakong 6:10 a.m. kahapon, at sinabing sumadsad ang barko sa Argos Point at dahil sa impact ay nabutas ang bow na pinasukan ng tubig.
Ang barkong pag-aari ng Galaxy Transportation Inc. ay may kargang 50,000 bags ng semento mula sa Cebu at nagdidiskarga sa Masbate port.

Ligtas na ang mga tripulante ng sumadsad na cargo vessel matapos ang mabilis na responde ng Naval Forces Southern Luzon kahapon ng umaga sa isang isla sa Masbate.
Dakong alas-sais ng umaga nang sumadsad ang MV Pacific Cruiser na pag-aari ng Galaxy Transportation sa Magcaragit Island sa nasabing lalawigan. Ang nasabing cargo vessel ay patungo sana sa Masbate City galing sa lalawigan ng Cebu.
Ayon kay Lt. Commander Ariel Leonida, agad silang rumesponde matapos na makumpirma ang nasabing insidente.
Nabatid na libu-libong sako ng semento ang laman ng nasabing cargo vessel nang siyasatin matapos itong madala sa mababaw na bahagi ng dagat.
Ayon pa kay Leonida na posibleng dahil sa sobrang bigat ng karga ang dahilan ng nasabing pagsadsad ng barko.
Patuloy naman ang ginagawang imbestigasyon upang mabatid ang dahilan ng insidente.

BAGUIO CITY — Lefty Leo Barredo gave up only three hits as Rizal Technological University beat the Cavite Province-Philippine Navy All Stars, 4-2, to win the men’s crown in the National Open softball championships at the Baguio City Athletic Bowl.
The second year physical education student produced another sterling performance as he struck out six batters while stranding two late in the game to frustrate the Caviteños.
University of Santo Tomas, however, spoiled RTU’s sweep bid by winning the women’s crown with a 3-1 win in the event sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier, Pera Padala, Cebuana Lhuillier Bank, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Phiten, Just Jewels and Le Soleil de Boracay.
The win was the Blue Thunders’ seventh straight.
Actually, they were unbeaten in the last two years as they ruled the recent State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association, Commission on Higher Education tournament and the Softball Pilipinas – first semi-pro event.
Last year, they topped Association of Southeast Asian Nations championship in Brunei and the Philippine Olympic Festival.

Some 272 Philippine Sailors and Marines returned to the country last Tuesday after a month-long overseas mission Malaysia where they engaged the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in the annual bilateral maritime training activity (MTA) dubbed MALPHI-LAUT 13/10.
Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman, said the arrival honors were rendered to the returning sailors and marines at the Capt. Moya Boat Landing, Naval Base Heracleo Alano, Sangley Point, Cavite City.
According to Arevalo, the Philippine contingent to the MTA MALPHILAUT 13/10 was composed of officers, crew, and some 272 Sailors and Marines. Also part of the contingent was a patrol vessel BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS 36), a logistics ship BRP Dagupan City (LC 551), a PN Helicopter (PNH) 411 and two teams of Naval Operations Group (NAVSOG).
The sailors and marines, among them the 49 Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 2010 members who joined the Navy, participated in the month-long annual bilateral MTA with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in Lumut, Malaysia and Malacca Strait area.

Two Royal Thai Navy ships — the HTMS Taksin and HTMS Chaopraya, arrived in Manila Wednesday for a five-day goodwill visit, which is expected to further strengthen the ties that bind the Philippine Navy and the Thai Navy as the two countries work togetherin the common pursuit of maintaining peace and stability in the ASEAN region.
Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman, said the Thai delegation is headed by Squadron Commander Rear Admiral Kraisorn Chansuvanich. The ships, now docked at Pier 13 in North Harbor, arrived at around 1 p.m.
Royal Thai Cadet Training Unit’s Commander is composed of 70 officers, 239 enlisted men, 20 non-military rank personnel, and 236 naval cadets. The ships are commanded by Capt. Samarn Khunthaphong and Capt. Skye Bekanan.
The Philippine Navy’s BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS36) met and escorted the visiting ships in the vicinity of Corregidor Island, a time-honored tradition among navies.

Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez has ordered the deployment of the Navy’s elite force, patrol vessels, and gun boats to help get the remaining members of the al Qaeda-inked Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in 60 days, in line with the order of Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Delfin Bangit.
Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman, said send-off ceremony will be held 7:30 a.m. Monday, March 22, at the Navy headquarters in Manila.
Arevalo said newly-repaired surface assets that will be deployed to operational areas in in the Visayas and Mindanao are BRP Rajah Humabon (PF 11), BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS 36), BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS 38), BRP Simeon Castro (PG 374), BRP Apollo Tiano (PG 851), and BRP Gen. Emilio Aguinlado (PG 140).
A company from the Philippine Marine Corps’ (PMC) elite force will also be deployed to Basilan to augment government forces present in the province. The Philippine Army also sent its specially-trained troops to the area.
The Navy FOIC will preside over the ceremony to be attended by Senior Fleet-Marine unit commanders.
Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban, Marine Commandant, and Rear Admiral Geronimo Defensor, Commander, Philippine Fleet, will assist Golez during the inspection of troops and their equipment prior to the send off.
“Binibining Pilipinas 2010 winners will likewise grace the occasion to help boost the morale of the sailors and marines which will result in their improved efficiency in the performance of their duties and responsibilities to the country and the Filipino people,” said Arevalo.
Considering the dangers of the task, the Navy will remain committed in the performance of their sworn duties to protect the people and preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” he added.

Navy to deploy gunboats to Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy is deploying a fleet of gunboats to strategic areas in Mindanao and the Visayas to hasten the defeat of the Abu Sayyaf terrorists.
Navy spokesperson Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said they will deploy newly-repaired gunboats BRP Rajah Humabon (PF 11), BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS 36), BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS 38), BRP Simeon Castro (PG 374), BRP Apollo Tiano (PG 851), and BRP Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo (PG 140).
An elite Marine company will also be dispatched to Basilan to support the ongoing operations against the Abu Sayyaf and other lawless groups in the island province.
Navy chief Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez will preside over the send off ceremony tomorrow at the Navy’s headquarters.
To boost the morale of the Marines, the Navy invited the winners of the Binibining Pilipinas 2010 beauty pageant to be present at the send off.
“Considering the dangers of the task, the Navy will remain committed to the performance of their sworn duties to protect the people and preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” Arevalo said.
After assuming command of the military’s 125,000-strong force, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Delfin Bangit vowed to crush the Abu Sayyaf within 60 days.
Bangit has directed the three major services – the Army, the Air Force and the Navy – to pool their resources for the operation.

Navy spokesperson Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said they will deploy newly-repaired gunboats BRP Rajah Humabon (PF 11), BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS 36), BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS 38), BRP Simeon Castro (PG 374), BRP Apollo Tiano (PG 851), and BRP Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo (PG 140).
An elite Marine company will also be dispatched to Basilan to support the ongoing operations against the Abu Sayyaf and other lawless groups in the island province.
Navy chief Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez will preside over the send off ceremony tomorrow at the Navy’s headquarters.
To boost the morale of the Marines, the Navy invited the winners of the Binibining Pilipinas 2010 beauty pageant to be present at the send off.
“Considering the dangers of the task, the Navy will remain committed to the performance of their sworn duties to protect the people and preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” Arevalo said.
After assuming command of the military’s 125,000-strong force, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Delfin Bangit vowed to crush the Abu Sayyaf within 60 days.
Bangit has directed the three major services – the Army, the Air Force and the Navy – to pool their resources for the operation.

Ngayong araw, buong puwersa ng Binibining Pilipinas 2010 winners ang makakasama ng matataas na opisyal ng Philippine Navy at Marines upang bigyan ng maikling seremonya ang mga sundalong ipapadala sa Sulu para tumulong sa paglipol ng mga natitira pang Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
Pangungunahan ni Flag-Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez at Marine Commandant Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban ang mga binibini para sa pagbibigay ng inspirasyon sa mga sundalong sasabak sa labanan.
Ayon kay Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, tagapagsalita ng Navy/Marines, ang mga sundalo ay kabahagi ng kanilang elite force at mananatili ng 60-araw o dalawang buwan sa Sulu.
Partikular na guguwardiyahan ng mga sundalo ang karagatang nakapalibot sa iba’t-ibang lugar sa Mindanao kung saan mayroong presensiya ng Abu Sayyaf habang tinutugis ng mga kapwa nilang sundalo ang mga ito sa kalupaan.

Combined elements of the Philippine Navy (PN) and local security forces in Tawi-Tawi have rescued a Malaysian fishing trawler hijacked earlier in Sabah, Malaysia.
Rear Admiral Alexander Pama, Naval Forces Western Mindanao ( NFWM) commander and head of Joint Task Force Trillium (TF Trillium), in a report to Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez, the Navy’s Flag Officer-In-Command (FOIC), Philippine Navy, said the Royal Malaysian Navy Area II Commander, First Admiral Anui has notified his office that a Malaysian registered vessel with six crew members was hijacked near Tigabu Island, Sabah, Malaysia by four suspected robbers at around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday
The hijackers were reportedly asking for a 150,000 Malaysian Ringgit as ransom. Pama said upon receipt of the information, he immediately coordinated with the local officials in Mapun and Taganak areas, and dispatched BRP Cebu (PS28) backed by a patrol craft with elements of the Marines from Marine Battalion Landing
Team (MBLT)2 on board.
“Immediate action of these Fleet-Marine Forces resulted to the early release of the fishing boat to its owners in Sabah on Wednesday in Malaysia,” said Pama.
“The decisive move pressured the hijackers into fleeing back to Sabah and release the trawler to its owners,” he added.
Pama noted the successful operation is attributed to the good relations the Royal Malaysian Navy and Philippine Navy has with its counterpart with other navies in the region.
“With a united stand and cooperation against terrorism and transnational crimes, Asians are assured of a peaceful and secured maritime environment. The Navy is always ready to respond to people in distress regardless of race and color. It is part of its commitment to the international community of providing security to local and national vessels transiting our waters,” according to Pama.
Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, Navy spokesman, also reported the recovery of a kidnap victim by Marine elements in Lamitan City, Basilan.
Arevalo said based on reports reaching the Navy headquarters in Manila, the victim, Examinda Lindio, was seized by a lone suspect March 13 at the vicinity of the public market of Sitio Oval, Barangay Matibay, Lamitan City.

ZAMBOANGA CITY- Marines rescued a 43-year-old female public school canteen manager in Lamitan City, basilan whow as allgedly kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group(ASG) last week.
They were able to arrest her kidnapper, a suspected member of the ASG.
Western Mindanao Command(WesMinCom) identified the kidnap victim as Examinda Lindio. She was rescued at 2pm last Thursday at the residence of the suspect in Barangay Maloong San Jose, Lamitan City.

TABIAWAN, Basilan , Philippines - Government troops overran a suspected Abu Sayyaf training camp near Sumisip town yesterday, following a week of ground offensive that left six extremists killed and 12 wounded.
Anti-terror Task Force Trillium and Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) chief Rear Admiral Alexander Pama said seven troops from the 1st Marine Brigade were wounded as they tried to take over the training camp in Upper Baiwas that were rigged with explosives and booby traps.
Pama said the troops seized several improvised explosive devices (IED), ammonium nitrate, grenades and rifle grenades fashioned into bombs, battery packs, tripwires, and training manuals for bomb making and demolition.
Among the other items recovered were documents revealing an amount of P50,000 was withdrawn on Feb. 4, 2010, indicating ransom money had been paid.
1st Marine Brigade chief Brig. Gen. Eugene Clemen added the troops destroyed 50 huts that served as quarters for more than 100 Abu Sayyaf militants led by Puruji Indama.
Pama said Khair Mundos, an Abu Sayyaf trained by the al-Qaeda linked Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), maintained the camp to train Indama’s men on explosives and bomb making.
Pama said Mundos managed to escape when government troops also launched an offensive on its training camp in Sitio Kurelem in Tipo-Tipo town.
“Khair Mundos and other Abu Sayyaf high value targets from Sulu were encamping in the training camp that was captured,” Pama said.
Pama said the explosives and training manual recovered at the site indicated the alliance of the Abu Sayyaf and JI to launch terror attacks in southern Philippines.
“They have a level of capability which is more dangerous,” Pama warned.
With the continued military operations, Pama said this would deny the Abu Sayyaf sanctuary and prevent them from returning to the area.

The Palace, along with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP), on Wednesday assured that the situation in Basilan is now under control following intensified military campaign against the perpetrators of the recent bombing attack that killed 12 people.
“Security and safety situation in Basilan has improved and is now going back to normal. Arevalo also said that additional fresh troops from Manila are now being deployed in Basilan to help in the augmentation and peacekeeping campaign in the province.
He also said that elite members of the Armed Forces and the Marines were deployed to the province to pursue the fleeing members of the Abu Sayyaf.
For his part, Gen. Edgardo Acuña of the national-police deputy chief for operations and concurrent commander of national task force HOPE (Prayer for an Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Elections) said that plans to secure the safe conduct of the elections have already been finalized.
Acuña said that they will employ three-step security plan on the island of Basilan and nearby provinces, which include the orientation of personnel about their responsibilities during election day, additional troops to areas considered as hot spots, and employment of civilian action force that would monitor police personnel specially those assigned to secure election paraphernalia.
“With these contingency measures, we are ready for any unexpected events,” he said.
Meanwhile, Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said that the Anti-Terrorism Council is continuously monitoring the situation in Basilan, saying that the President Gloria Arroyo is “dead serious” that there will be no failure of elections.
Basilan has been tagged as an election hot spot because of the presence of private armed groups and history of election-related violence.
Besides Basilan, additional police officers and soldiers have been deployed to nine provinces that are considered as “priority areas” including La Union, Nueva Ecija and Masbate in Luzon; Samar and Iloilo in Visayas; and Lanao del Sur, North Cotabato, Sulu and Maguindanao.
Meanwhile, one of two captured Abu Sayyaf militants tagged as among those behind twin bombings in Basilan had died from his wounds at a local military hospital, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said Umbar, who was wounded in a firefight with troops last week, died late Tuesday in hospital at the military’s Western Mindanao Command headquarters. “An Abu Sayyaf member captured by government troops after the attack in Isabela City in Basilan died of cardio respiratory arrest secondary to sepsis due to his infected wounds,” said First Lt. Steffani Cacho, a regional military spokesman.
She said the body of the militant was handed over to an imam and buried in a coastal village called Caragasan, west of Zamboanga City.
Cacho said another militant, Ajib Hainal, who was also wounded in the fighting and captured by the military in Basilan province, would soon be handed over to the police.
“Hainal is ready for release to the police,” she said.

Sulu officials laud military for successful operations

Jolo, Sulu – Government officials of Sulu lauded the military for their success in their recent combat operations against the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) that led to the death of Albader Parad and four others Sunday in Indanan, Sulu.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan said the successful military operations against the ASG in Karawan, Indanan, is a victory for the people of the entire province.
Jolo Mayor Hussin Amin also joined Tan, and the religious sectors here saying the people of Indanan and those living in the adjacent towns can now live peacefully and away from harm and harassment from the ASG.
The military assaulted on Sunday morning a well fortified camp of the ASG in Karawan, Indanan which led to the death of Parad, the infamous ASG leaders, Abdulhamn Jumdail, and four others Tan also renewed his commitment to fully support the military’s peace efforts in the province aimed at keeping Sulu free from terrorist groups.
“The death of Parad will send a strong signal to other lawless groups in the province that the government means business and will continue to hunt them anywhere in the province,” Tan said.
Amin said with the death of Parad, illegal activities like kidnappings for ransom, extortion, and destruction of lives and properties will be minimized.
Amin expressed confidence that very soon, the military would be able to completely neutralize the terrorist group and other lawless groups operating in Sulu.
Imam Hadji Abduraja Abdulla, representing the religious sector, said the death of Parad placed an end to the sufferings of the people of Indanan.
Abdulla said the people would no longer witness the destruction of their villages, farm-to-market roads, bridges, school buildings, and other infrastructures built by the government for the comfort of the populace.
Meanwhile, Joint Task Force Comet commander Marine Brig. Gen. Rustico Guerrero has allowed the families and relatives of the dead bandits to accord them decent burials according to Muslim rites.
Guerrero said the military in Sulu will continue to fight lawless groups operating in the province in order to give way for new development to spur in the area.

Marines foil Abu attack

ZAMBOANGA CITY- Followers of slain Abu Sayyaf
leader Albader Parad attacked on Tuesday night a
Marine detachment at the boundary of Indanan
and Maimbung towns in Sulu, the military said.
However, the Marines thwarted the attack,
which was apparently in retaliation for the
death of Parad and five of his followers during a
special operation last Sunday.
Among those killed was Abdulhaman Jumdail,
brother of Abu Sayyaf leader Umbra Jumdail
alias Dr. Abu Pula. A Marine, S/Sgt. Eliseo Salo,
was killed and three others were wounded
in the surgical military strike.
"No casualty was reported from our side as our
forces have been alerted and have anticipated
the possible retaliatory attack," said Brig. Gen.
Rustico Guerrero, chief of the anti-terror Task Force
Comet.
However, following Tuesday night's incident
the Marines have further beefed up their security
measures to foil more direct attacks by Abu Sayyaf
bandits.
Guerrero said they are now focusing on the group
of Jumdail as they now consider Parad's group as a
spent force.
He disclosed that in last Sunday's offensive Jumdail's
group was just near the hideout of Parad's forces on Mt.
Tukay in Indanan town.
Jumdail's men, he said, tried to reinforce Parad's
group but were prevented as government troops had
positioned themselves along all possible routes.
The Armed Forces' Western Mindanao Command clarified
that Parad was carrying a bounty of $1 million, not
$80,000.
Meanwhile, Salo was given a hero's welcome at
the Marine headquarters in Taguig City yesterday.
Salo's body was flown from Zamboanga City to
Manila to allow the Marine Corps to pay their last
respects to their fallen comrade.
Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said more
than a hundred sailors and Marine personnel led by
Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez and Marine Corps
commandant Maj. Gen.Juancho Sabban attended
the ceremony.
"Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez condoles with the
family of Staff Sergeant Salo. He vows the Navy 'will
sustain its Fleet-Marine operations to rid the
island-province of bandit and terror groups,"
Arevalo said.
Arevalo said Salo will be posthumously promoted
to technical sergeant and will receive a wounded
personnel medal, which is given to soldiers who
sustained injuries during actual combat.
Salo's family will also receive P250,000 in
financial assistance from President Arroyo and PI5,OOO
in burial assistance.
"His (Salo) family will benefit from his pension.
His contributions to all savings and loan associations
will also be refunded," Arevalo said in a telephone
interview.
Arevalo said Salo's body will be
flown to Cagayan Valley, where he will
be buried.

35 Navy officials promoted

The Philippine Navy promoted 35 of its officials
yesterday.
In a statement, the Navy said the 35 officials
were given their rank insignias during
the Monday morning colors at the Philippine
Navy Headquarters in Manila.
Promoted to the rank of Navy captain were
Commanders Rommel Jude Ong, Rey de la Cruz, Erick
Kagaoan, Loumer Bernabe, Rosauro Sarmiento,
Noel de Vera, Rommel Jayson Galang, Adeluis

Marines didn't know they hit the jackpot

ZAMBOANGA CITY-SOLDIERS wounded in a clash
with Abu Sayyaf bandits they had been chasing
for a day and a night did not know they had landed a
big fish.
Only when the hour long gun battle ended on
Sunday morning and the bodies of the six men
they had killed were identified did they learn
that one of them was A1bader Parad-a "ruthless
leader" of a bandit group linked to a worldwide
terror network.
Cpl. Marcelino Landicho of the Marine Battalion
Landing Team 4 said he and his fellow Marines
were briefed about raiding a suspected Abu
Sayyaf lair but "we didn't know they were
high-value targets."
One Marine was killed in the fighting.
Landicho and two others were wounded.
Parad, a young, brash bandit who gained
notoriety after posing for cameras with three
international Red Cross hostages last year,
had built up a fortune of $400,000 from his
kidnapping operation.
He was the second top Abu Sayyaf leader
killed by soldiers in an encounter since
the death of "Emir" Khadaffy Janjalani in a
clash in September 2006. Four months later,
troops killed his deputy, Abu Sulaiman,
in another gun battle.
Out of the 24 original Abu Sayyaf leaders,
about half a dozen remain at large. The rest
are dead or in jail. The group's oldest,
ailing commander, one armed Radulan Sahiron,
has not been seen since a 2008 clash.
Only two other influential leaders remain-
Umbra Jumdail,an ideologue also known
as Dr. Abu Pula and Isnilon Hapilon, who
carries a US reward of $5 million for his
capture. However, Hapilon might have suffered
a stroke, the military said.
"There are no young leaders emerging,"
said Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino, head of the
military's Western Mindanao Command.
Dolorfino said Parad carried a US bounty
of $1 million on his head (not $5 million
as the INQUIRER previously reported).The
Philippines also offered a P7 million
reward for him.
Hiking day and night
On the trail of the bandits,Corporal Landicho
and his fellow Marines hiked for a day and
night while Carreon to reach Karawan village
in Maimbung, Sulu, only to learn the bandits
had left.
"They had transferred to another location not
far from where we were," Landicho said.
Then, the bandits, armed with high-powered guns,
opened fire. MSgt. Eliseo Salo was killed.
"We fought back," Landicho said."They fired at
us before running away. We also fired at them
... until they withdrew."
The fighting left Landicho, Pfc. Joselito Carreon
and Cpl. Antonony Carmona wounded.
Landicho sustained shrapnel wounds on a leg.
Carmona had blast injuries on his body,
while Carreon took a bullet in the abdomen.
Morale booster
At his hospital bed, carmona said he did not
realize that Parad was among those killed.
"This is a big boost to our morale. Despite our
wounds, if we get this kind of news, it makes
us proud," Carmona said.
The wounded soldiers were given medals for
bravery in battle.
Parad and his group were behind the abduction
of International Committee of the Red Cross
members Mary Jean Lacaba, Eugenio Vagni and
Andreas Notter last year. He was also blamed
for kidnapping ABS-CBN reporter Ces Drilon and
her crew in 2008.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan said he was "101
percent positive" it was Parad whom the
troops killed.
"Parad's relatives positively identified
him and they confirmed his death," the governor
said.
He said two younger brothers of Dr.Abu were
also killed in the clash.
Fatmawatti Salapuddin of the Sulu-based
Bangsamoro Women's Association, also confirmed
to the Inquirer that it was Parad who was
killed. She and Parad were cousins.
Started as errand boy
"This is a big blow to the Abu Sayyaf,"
Dolorfino said. "He was the most visible
among the leaders.The fear of the people for the
Abu Sayyaf is represented by the face
of Albader, which always comes out in newspapers."
Dolorfino described Parad as a "ruthless leader."
While the Abu Sayyaf has shown the ability to
recover after key leaders are killed or captured,
Dolorfino said there were no signs of
significant new leaders coming up.
Parad, who appeared to be in his 20s, began
as an errand boy in the bandits' jungle camps.
In 2000, he took part in a mass kidnapping
at the Sipadan resort in nearby Malaysia
that netted 10 Europeans and 11 other people,
according to a military dossier.
Parad came from a poor family where most
relatives had links to the Abu Sayyaf. He had
reportedly amassed more than $400,000 from
a string of earlier abductions, some of which
was invested by relatives in passenger transport
and coconut farmlands.
The Abu Sayyaf is blamed for the country's
worst bomb attacks,kidnapping sprees and
for beheading some of its hostages. It is also
blamed for the bombing of a passenger ferry
in Manila Bay that killed over 100 people in 2004.
The Abu Sayyaf which means "Father of the
Swordsman" in Arabic, was founded in
1991 in Basilan province with suspected
funds from Asian and Midlle Eastern radical groups,
including al-Qaida.
Dolorfino said Sunday's killings gave hope
that the Abu Sayyaf could finally be crushed.
"Without the leaders, the members will be
directionless and, if no new leader emerges,
they may crumble," said Dolorfino.
He said the Abu Sayyaf was now believed to
have only 330 fighters on Jola, with another
61 on Basilan. This is down from a peak of

ng distress call si PO2 Jaime Garcia, kapitan
ng Navy boat DF321 na nakabase sa Puerto Real,
Quezon, mula kay Zaldy Azagra, kapitan ng M/B Raffy,
kaya agad na nagsagawa ng search and rescue operation
sa nasabing lugar, na may layong 3.6 kilometro sa
Dinahican Point.
Nailigtas ng Navy ang pampasaherong bangka mula sa
Polilio Island patungong Real, na may lulan na siyam
na crew member at 64 na pasahero.

73 people rescued from distressed boat

Navy personnel rescued 73 crew and passengers of a
motorized boat which suffered mechanical problem off
the shore of Infanta, Quezon, a military spokesman
said yesterday.
Navy Lieutenant (senior grade)Darwin Nieva, spokesman
of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon, said the MB Raffy
was on its way to Real town from Polilio Island last
Friday morning when the shaft connecting
the engine and the propeller was detached.
"A boat which was incapacitated when it lost its
power and steering is extremely dangerous given the sea
condition," said Nieva.
"Once it lost its power and stalled, it may
be overturned by big waves, swept away to high seas or
run aground," he added.
Nieva said a navy boat stationed nearby immediately
proceeded in the area and towed the passenger
boat to safety, adding that no one was hurt during
the incident.
The official attributed the safe rescue to the boat
captain who immediately sought the assistance
through a distress call he sent to local authorities.

at a one-day outreach mission held by
Filipino and United States (US) soldiers
together with provincial health officials
on the island province of Basilan.

Basilan-based 1st Marine Brigade, said the
outreach program was held Thursday in
Barangay Magkawa, AI-Barka town. Clemen
said 467 patients were examined and provided
with treatment, 83 had tooth extractions
and were provided with dental care, while
10 young boys were circumcised during the
Medical and Dental Civic Action
Program (MEDCAP). Clemen said the MEDCAP
is aimed to bring the soldiers closer to the
community whom they profess to serve,
protect and defend. He said it is also
aimed to win the hearts and minds of the people
towards supporting the military authorities
in the fight against lawless elements like
the Abu Sayyaf bandits.

Navy in Albay post-evacuation care program

LEGAZPI CITY - The Naval Forces Southern Luzon in
partnership with Office of Civil Defense led anew
an outreach project for the victims of Mayon
Volcano eruption in response to a call sounded
by Albay Gov. Joey Salceda for assistance.
The naval forces distributed rice to displaced
families in Amore resettlement area as part of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines and Office of
Civil Defense (OCD)joint project dubbed
"TARABANGAN: Sama-sama sa pagtulong para sa
mga Biktima ng Bulkang Mayon."
A resettlement area located in Bgy Anislag
in Daraga town is the relocation site for the
displaced families from Bgy Binitayan
and Bgy Bañag who were directly affected by
Mayon eruption.
Salceda said the said relocation would reduce
the number of evacuees during Mayon eruptive
episodes and allow schools, which are being
used as evacuation center, to function normally
and limit the displacement of pupils.
Apart from rice distribution,the Navymen also
conducted feeding to children at the evacuation sites.
The Philippine Navy is one of the steady partners
of local government units to mitigate the
effect of disaster in the region.
Earlier this year, Philippine Navy Chief,
Vice Admiral FerdinandGolez directed all naval
units to sustain efforts in developing robust
disaster response posture to continue as
credible and relevant partner of the people in
disaster mitigation responsive in the current times.
A similar activity was also held in Bgy Padang,
this city.

A resettlement area located in Bgy Anislag
in Daraga town is the relocation site for the
displaced families from Bgy Binitayan
and Bgy Bañag who were directly affected by
Mayon eruption.
Salceda said the said relocation would reduce
the number of evacuees during Mayon eruptive
episodes and allow schools, which are being
used as evacuation center, to function normally
and limit the displacement of pupils.
Apart from rice distribution,the Navymen also
conducted feeding to children at the evacuation sites.
The Philippine Navy is one of the steady partners
of local government units to mitigate the
effect of disaster in the region.
Earlier this year, Philippine Navy Chief,
Vice Admiral FerdinandGolez directed all naval
units to sustain efforts in developing robust
disaster response posture to continue as
credible and relevant partner of the people in
disaster mitigation responsive in the current times.
A similar activity was also held in Bgy Padang,
this city.

In Command Philippine Navy on Nov. 16, 2009 in
Jakarta, Indonesia.
During the investiture ceremony held at the
Indonesian National Forces Headquarters at Cilangkap,
Gen Djoko Santoso, Commander In Chief, Indonesian
National Defense Forces awarded the medal to Vice Admiral
Golez before the top brass of the Indonesian and
Philippine Navies that included Vice Admiral Agus
Suhartono, Chief of Naval Staff of the Indonesian Navy;
Commodore Eriberto Suria Jr.,Commander, Naval Forces
Eastern Mindanao; and Captain Rafel Mariano
PN (GSC), Defense Armed Forces Attache to Indonesia.
In the citation signed by Indonesian President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on August 27, 2009,
Vice Admiral Golez was cited for his "invaluable services
rendered in the improvement and strengthening of a
good joint cooperation with the government of the
Republic of Indonesia in general, and National
Military Navy of both countries in particular."
The award is a fitting recognition of Vice Admiral
Golez's unrelenting efforts in improving relations
between Indonesia and the Philippines. As the then
Commander of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao from
2006-2007,Vice Admiral Golez was the Vice Chair
and Head of Delegation, respectively of the RP Panel to the
Philippines-Indonesia Border Committee Conference
on two occasions.
As the Commanding Officer of BRP Miguel Malvar (PS 19),
Vice Admiral Golez contributed to the successful conduct of the
Philippine Navy ASEAN Training Cruise in 1994
visiting four countries, including Indonesia.

government on members of the Indonesian Navy, civilians,
and foreign nationals for their ability, dedication,
prudence, merit, braveness, and perseverance.
It is covered by a presidential decree based on the
recommendation of the Commandant of the Indonesian Navy
through the Ministry of Defense, and given to an awardee

Naval base in Visayas renamed

CEBU CITY - By virtue of the Philippine Navy General Order No.
229, the Naval Forces Central (NavForCen) which covers the Visayas
Islands was renamed the other day,as the Naval Base Rafael Ramos (NBRR)
in recognition to one of the founding
fathers of the Philippine Navy. Col.Rafael T Ramos.
Vice Admiral Ferdinand S.Golez, the Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippine
Navy was the principal sponsor of the renaming ceremony of the NavForCen
home base to NBRR which was then the Naval Operating Base Mactan
NOBM)hosted by Naval Forces Central commander Commodore Honorio
Robert Balanon Jr, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
According to Judyline Cañoneo, information officer of the home base,
previously, the Naval Bases and Marine Facilities of the Philippine Navy
were named after its geographical location, however due to Golez's initiatives,
which aim to honor the memory of many naval personnel who have
greatly contributed prestige and honor to the development of the Philippine
Navy,the home base was named after them.
Moreover, the contribution of Ramos in the Philippine Navy was
highlighted on April 1938 during the time of President Manuel L. Quezon's
administration where the AFP - which is solely the Philippine Army at that
time - was alarmed when a news report about a "mysterious flotilla"was
sighted maneuvering in Davao Gulf.
