A US Marine does patrol with Filipino troops as part of joint exercises near the Philippine Marines base in Ternate, Cavite. More than 3,000 sailors, marines, and aviators including logistics support units arrived last week for the exercises.

US marines and their local counterparts approach a beach on rubber boats to secure a hill during joint military exercises in Cavite yesterday. US Ambassador Manila Harry Thomas has said his government would continue to send troops to the Philippines for joint anti-terror trainings until the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf was wiped out as part of its security engagement with Manila.l
